Outdoor Living

Creating a relaxing outdoor space has come a long way from propping up a couple of Adirondack chairs on the porch or stringing up a line of Chinese lanterns over the deck. These days, outdoor spaces are much more sophisticated and rival many indoor rooms in comfort and livability. Outdoor furnishings are more refined, lighting and audio are more technologically advanced, and landscaping possibilities are virtually limitless. Furniture and fabrics are more resistant to the elements, too. Now that the warmer months have arrived, it’s time to venture out and enjoy a sun-splashed day or star-studded evening. Four designers offer their tips for getting the most out of your outdoor space.

GET SMART
Smart home features are a fantastic way to enhance interior spaces, but when installed outdoors, they can take our entertainment possibilities to the next level. The 9-foot screen here can be seen from the patio, outdoor kitchen area, and even inside the home through the windows. It’s all possible because of an advanced audio system that consists of multiple speakers in sync throughout the interior and exterior spaces. The pavilion itself is retrofitted with a retractable glass overhead door to seal the area from the weather.

DECORATE FUNCTIONALLY
The ever-changing environment in Michigan should always be top of mind when choosing outdoor furnishings and appliances. A mildew-resistant rug will not only add to your décor, but also does a great job anchoring your furniture. Oversized umbrellas offer protection from the sun and rain, and propane heaters are a great option to extend the season.

INCORPORATE THE ELEMENTS
Adding water and fire elements into your outdoor spaces is in tune with nature and creates a warm, restful space. Ponds and waterfalls with rock and accent lighting create a relaxed environment. The soothing sounds of water are a stress reducer after a long day. Fire elements consisting of fire pots in interesting sculptural shapes create additional lighting and also serve as an insect repellant. Fire tables bring conversation areas together while adding warmth on a chilly night.

INSTALL A GARDEN ROOM
A light-filled sanctuary, a true "living space" filled with live plants and the bright colors of a summer garden, is like stepping into a year-round tropical paradise. The warm rays of the sun help to create a haven from which one is able to sit and visually mingle with the marvels of nature for all seasons – even winter.
