We’ve turned over the collective calendar page to a whole new year, and the newness of 2025 may have inspired more than a few hopeful resolutions and ambitious self-improvement goals. But as a wise mentor used to say, hope is not a plan. Part of the work is to set the goal, but the real work comes in planning how to achieve it. Design pros know that a well-designed environment can go a long way to help support our goals and set us up for success! Whether you want to get organized and fine-tune your daily routine, or create space for quiet reflection and self-care, designers share their tips to help our resolutions last well into spring.
RESOLUTION: Focus on Self-Care
Sara Filthaut, Kaybrook Designs
Many clients resolve to create a relaxing space at home where they can retreat, refresh, and reflect. The trick is to create the space with intention so that when you spend time there, you are transported into the right frame of mind to focus your attention on rest and regeneration. Roll fluffy towels and place them in a basket, choose bath salts, candles, and soft lighting to help set the scene, and organize whatever self-care elements you like and keep them close at hand so that setting aside time for yourself is easy and seamless.
RESOLUTION: Host More Gatherings

For clients who would like to entertain more often, I help them create dedicated spaces for party essentials, so impromptu get-togethers are stress-free. A designated bar area – whether in a cabinet, cubby, or cart - keeps glassware, mixers, and napkins organized, so all you need to do is fill the ice bucket for quick and easy drinks with friends. Trays and tiered stands make creating an appetizer station on your kitchen island a breeze. And, keep entertaining supplies and décor in a dedicated place so items are easy to find, helping you avoid accidentally buying duplicates.
RESOLUTION: Get Organized and Set Up for Success
Anita Sneideraitis, Gunnar Olivier Design
A well-designed and organized central space in the home is essential for bringing the family together and supporting their daily routines. Creating dedicated zones for meal prep, school or office work, and relaxation gives order and purpose to each area. For example, file drawers and work surfaces that pull out and pop up can be incorporated into cabinetry in homes that lack office space for homework. Underutilized space in a corner or under the stairs can be transformed into a pantry or coat room. Reimagining the high traffic areas in the home can provide an incredible amount of function and flow!
