BRIGHT IDEA: New Light Fixtures

by Kimberly Turner

If you have a room in your home that just seems to need that extra “something” consider a new light fixture. Whether it’s in a main room or a secondary area of your home, a new light fixture can really add a special touch that makes the difference between ordinary and extraordinary.

MAIN ROOMS
Changing out the light fixture in your foyer, dining room or kitchen may be all you need to make that room come alive and shine. When selecting the fixture, be sure the style is consistent with the overall design scheme of the space. You wouldn’t want to introduce a sleek, contemporary fixture in an oversized, traditional kitchen.

Don’t be afraid of color. The days of “all neutral” lighting are gone as numerous manufacturers now offer a variety of spectacular chandeliers that incorporate a variety of color tones. Or, to make a more dramatic statement, consider one of the many colored or painted glass fixtures now available.

If incorporating color is a bit too much for you, consider a classic fixture of appropriate size. A simple brass or crystal chandelier, placed in a larger size, can be the perfect finishing touch for your space. Be sure to select a fixture that doesn’t overpower the room and maintains scale with furniture and ceiling heights. Traditional ceiling fixtures are also getting a facelift with the introduction of new shapes. A curve or twist of the metal support can add a nice touch of whimsy to a room.

SECONDARY AREAS
Hallways and powder rooms are another great setting to add a fabulous wall sconce (or two!) Again, when selecting the fixture, be sure it relates to the overall style of the area. Also, try to coordinate with bath hardware and plumbing fixtures when possible. The soft, general lighting from a wall sconce creates a peaceful atmosphere that makes a house a home.

Finally, be sure to have any important light fixture wired to a dimmer, on a separate switch, to allow for just the right amount of lighting needed.
